Insights

Pluralistic therapists like myself try to talk in straight, easy-to-digest terms and as free of jargon as possible. To this end, I have written some insights about therapy. This is to support your understanding of commonly asked questions.

We believe it is important to empower clients with transparent, clear information. If you know what to expect and how to use it, you will be able to get the most out of it. I also understand it to be ethically appropriate, as part of my commitment to those I work with.

Included here, for example, are info pieces about finding a therapist that will work well for your needs, the different types of therapy you can opt for, and whether working online or in-person might be best for you. If you are therapy-experienced and want more nuanced or complex insights about therapy, you are very welcome to write to me.

“The longer I live, the more deeply I learn that love – whether we call it friendship or family or romance – is the work of mirroring and magnifying each other’s light. Gentle work. Steadfast work. Life-saving work in those moments when life and shame and sorrow occlude our own light from our view, but there is still a clear-eyed loving person to beam it back. In our best moments, we are that person for each other.”

James Baldwin, 1964

“If you want love without hurt, or love without risk, or love without vulnerability, or love without the fear of what the other person can do to you, then we’re not talking about love.”

Esther Perel (n.d., cited in Shedler, 2023)
